How To Event; the JuliaJune way

Last Tuesday was the highly-buzzed-about presentation of the JuliaJune FW14 collection. And a special presentation it was.. It was held in the little piece of Ghent history that is bakery Fevery. As you probably know, Fevery decided to close shop after 65 years. 

The brand opted for this space because it was a great way to mark the transition from history to future; this August, JuliaJune will take over the building and give it a new life as a concept store.

Now firstly, I want to take the time to congratulate the entire team on their work. It was an event like few I have seen before. Most brands and agencies have taken up the tendency to act as mass producers of events. Every single one looks and feels the same. But not this one. 

Neither costs nor energy were spared to make sure all guests had a great evening. No cava, but champagne. No lousy playlist, but an awesome real life DJ. And no scruffy cheap goodie bags, but a crazy Tshirt that was created just for the occasion. You know me, I won't shut up if I am disappointed. But when I enjoy something, I will tell it too.

I felt like they wanted me there, and I am sure the other bloggers, stylists and journalists felt the same way. This is an event I write about with pleasure, and a smile on my face from the memories still lingering in my mind. Does that sound fatuous? Ah well.. ;)

About the collection; Season after season, the direction in which JuliaJune will grow becomes more clear. The first two collections were rather 'open', in a way that their were a few different takes on young feminine style. Some pieces were daring, others were cosy and sweet. Now it is more edgy and high fashion. More naughty and 'look-at-me'. 

And that we like. There are already way to many sweet girly brands.

Boring briefs for Valentine's? Think again!

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, many a girl/boyfriend is on the hunt for the perfect present. They probably erased the classic briefs and boxers from their lists, for being boring or uninspired. But I am here to tell you, that's not always true.

For this Valentine's Day inspiration post I selected two pieces of underwear with just that little extra. Take a look;

When I came across these beauties, I knew I wanted to share them with all of you. Actually, they were the main reason I decided to write this post. is an Australian brand founded by three friends who wanted to create something that would turn the industry around. Mesh Addicted Boxers

This type of underwear is on a high rise. Every major underwear brand is making pieces with mesh (that's the sporty fabric) and I predict many more will follow. It is also completely on trend with what we've seen during the latest men's shows in Paris, Milan and London. Check this trend report, to see which designers incorporated mesh in their collections for next winter.

Addicted is one of my favorite brands because they deliver great quality, always, and they like to spice things up a bit. But with a name like that, one couldn't expect anything less.

This was men's FW'14

Now the last model sashayed off the runway and the department stores placed their orders, it is time to put together an overview of the season that was.

1) Big dramatic coats
This was the first thing that really got to me. 
Coats are structured, strong, stand off the body. They are long, chunky, it almost seems like the coat is carrying the person, and not the other way around. This I think, is the main thing for next fall. So if you are on a limited budget, invest in a coat like this.

2) Formal with a twist.
Straighten your backs and comb that hair, we are going formal again. But not really. 
Designers are moving away from the XXL and baggy pieces. Lines are strong and straight. Think more suits, shirts, tight pullovers,.. Dressed up, so it seems. 

But then there always is this twist. Changed proportions (Margiela, CDG), patches sewn on blazers (Versace, Raf Simons), a splash of color (Margiela, Burberry) or dressed down with sportswear and sneakers (Fendi).

Key in this are the trousers. Those are the only thing about the look that is not tight.

3) FUR!
Ever since Anna put fur on the cover of Vogue in the nineties, it has never really been gone in the women's collections. But now it is trickling down to us, men. Fendi, though well known for its use of fur, went beyond everything and covered their runway with it. Faux, they proclaimed afterwards.

Apart from Prada, who did a full fur coat, most brands used it as a detail for a scarf or jacket.

4) Mesh
This one is still small, but I'm seeing a big future. 
I first noticed this in the underwear department, where every major brand now has some pieces made out of mesh (Versace, 2(x)ist, Addicted, Aussiebum). Some designers catched this and incorporated it in their FW14, but I'm estimating it will take a season or two before you will see mesh on the streets regularly.

5) Folded Clutch + Big Bag
Bags are in line with the former seasons. Clutches are still here, but now they're a bit bigger and folded. So normal bags folded in half, have taken the place of pochette clutches. That makes you wear them on wrist-height, between arm and body.

Big structured bags are also holding on (see Burberry above).They too have gotten bigger, and I assume, heavier.

That's Hot

When I post trend predictions some people get offended. Some see it as a personal insult when I declare something to be over. But that is not really the point of me doing such thing.

For example; when I tweet that "people should get over Gin&Tonic already", I don't mean to say G&T is a bad product or that it's users are losers. Likewise for Dubai, wedge sneakers, French cuisine, rococo interiors etc. It just means the it-crowd has moved on to something new. And in a business like ours, that happens quite often. In New York City a restaurant may open, reach it zenit and end up bankrupt in a mere two weeks. Does that mean the chef has lost his talent? Does it mean staff suddenly became unfriendly? Of course not. They're just not 'it' anymore.

So my declarations are no judgements of value, but only a simple constatation of facts. If you like your G&T, keep on drinking it. Sure. It makes you more cool than anyone who jumps from one trend to the next. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said; “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is still the greatest accomplishment.” But as a lifestyle blogger it is my duty to constantly spot the next big thing.

Also one little remark should be made here. I wholeheartedly hope that my favorite products never become a hype like G&T has. Because when that happens, it very frequently ruins the feeling you have with a product. Admit, when someone offers you a G&T these days, don't you just roll your eyes? Whereas a few months ago you would have eagerly accepted it. It's like a running crowd looking for something good, not noticing they are trampling the best thing they had because they are already looking the next one.

The Blogger Wears Prada

Due to the movie with Meryl Streep as Prada-nymphomaniac Miranda Priestly, the name 'Prada' has gotten that extra touch of bling. And ever since I saw it, I have longed for something that very boldly stated 'Prada'. 

So when Designer Outlet Roermond invited me to come over for a day of shopping to celebrate their new Prada shop I didn't hesitate for a second.

And yesterday was the day. We were picked up by a chaufered black Mercedes Benz in Antwerp and then departed for Roermond, The Netherlands. Damn how I felt like Anna Wintour ;). After an 1,5 hour drive we reached the center of Roermond. 'We' was Ibe from Mademoiselle Rosselle, Elien from Dogs&Dresses and Paulien from Polienne and me! In Roermond we were joined by Dutch bloggers Joyce from JustLikeSushi and Yara from ThisChicksGotStyle. As usual I was the only boy.. Where are the others? Come on boys, join me! 

Upon arival we were welcomed by the head of marketing of Roermond, a Mc Arthur Glen social media officer from London and by Yolanda from Cachet PR. When they proposed to start off with a coffee, there came sighs of relieve from the blogcrowd. For most of us the alarm clock went off that morning at 6.30am. So we could use some black gold. 

Our guides explained how Roermond in eleven years slowly grew from just a few stores to the big branded village it is today. I'm sure it must have something to do with the incredibly friendly shop assistants. And off course the low prices ;) You can save from 30% up to 70% of the retail price! And can you believe Roermond is open 363 days a year? They only close on Christmas Day and on the 1st of January.  

In 2016 another part will be added to the complex. And there even are rumours that in 2018, they will open a similar outlet center near Ghent!

After coffee came a guided tour during which Paulien immediately set her eyes on a Mulberry bag. Then came lunch. Healthy much, right? Had to stay in shape for the Prada jeans I was about to buy.

And after lunch, finally time for SHOPPING. We were given a creditcard worth 250€ and a 10% discount on everything. The blogger's faces were glowing of excitement and joy, as you can imagine. 

I chose very wisely and ended up with a pair of Prada Jeans (110€, retail price around 400€), some Burberry gloves (140€, retail price around 550€) and a Polo Ralph Lauren T-shirt & pajama trousers (50€, retail around 100€). We had a crazily beautiful day. The Christmas lights created a magical vibe and all I wanted to do was snooze away in this dream of perfect decadency. I am very thankful towards Roermond Outlet Center for the invitation and I am sure I will go back there to shop. Something I can recommend to all of you actually. And you know I don't approve easily of things.
